Uttarakhand
Blessed with magnificent glaciers, majestic snow-clad mountains, exotic peaks, valleys with flowers and dense forests, Uttarakhand, formerly known as Uttaranchal, is simply a heaven on earth! This is also said to be the paradise where the gods live. The most sacred and revered Hindu temples Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri and locations with immense spiritual importance like Haridwar and Rishikesh are in this state. With its numerous adventure sports options like white-water rafting, boating, skiing and camping, the state offers unlimited thrills to the tourists. With 65 per cent of its land covered with forests, Uttarakhand is a treasure trove of natural wonders. Destinations like Corbett, Nanda Devi and Rajaji National Parks provide the tourist with a unique opportunity of discovering the wilderness. Overall, a picturesque state, with breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas, Uttarakhand promises its guests a visit full of fun and unforgettable moments.
 GETTING HERE
Dehradun, the gateway and the capital of Uttarakhand, is well connected with Delhi and other important cities in North India by air. Dehradun is an important railhead of Northern Railways and is connected to many parts of the country with express trains. Trains from Dehradun connect several important places inside the state as well as North India. Dehradun and all parts of the state are well connected by roads. Deluxe, semi deluxe and ordinary buses are available to and from centres like Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Shimla and Allahabad. Distances from Dehradun to some important destinations are Delhi 255 kms, Agra 381 kms, Jaipur 493 kms, Lucknow 582 kms, Haridwar 54 kms, Rishikesh 43 kms, Kedarnath 274 kms, Nainital 297 kms and Mussoorie 36 kms. To move around in the cities of the state, local transportation like taxis, private bus services, auto rickshaws, tongas and cycle-rickshaws are available.
 WHAT TO SEE
The idyllic location of Dehradun endows it with a pleasant climate that makes the city a popular getaway in the summers. Places of tourist interest in Dehradun are Robber's Cave, Tapkeshwar Temple, Tapovan, Malsi Deer Park, Kalinga edicts built by Emperor Ashoka, Buddhist Monasteries and Forest Research Institute. The Central Braille Press or Rashtriya Drishtibaditarth Sansthan Bharat located here is the largest producer of Braille texts in India.

Mussoorie is popularly known as the 'Queen of the Hills'. This amazingly beautiful hill station is just 34 kms from Dehradun and is located at an altitude of 2003 metres above sea level.

Dhanaulti, which is 50 kms from Dehradun is a picturesque location with its landscape filled with meadows and pine forests.

Almora, owing to its natural splendour, is situated on a three-mile long horseshoe shaped ridge and has several important shrines. However the tourists prefer visiting Almora for its beauty and serenity.

Bageshwar is one of the main camping sites for the journey to Pindari Glacier, which is situated at a height of 3,820 metres.

Kausani is one of the hill stations in Uttarakhand that offers unmatched views of the mountains.
Pindari Glacier is a very popular trekking destination in this region.

Nainital is the land of green hills and lakes, and perhaps one of the most popular hill stations in North India, visited every year by thousands of tourists.

Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary, 7 kms from Chopta is famous for breeding musk deer. This sanctuary covers an area of 5 sq. km and is an ideal place for tourists to view rare Himalayan wildlife.

Located 51 kms from Nainital, Mukteshwar is located at a height of 2286 metres above sea level and is a pristine, serene hill town with awe-inspiring beauty.

Pauri is a land with splendid views of the snow peaks of Himalayas, scenic valleys, meandering rivers, dense forests and beautiful people.

Ranikhet is a quaint little hill station tucked in the hills of Uttarakhand. Conceived by the British, Ranikhet has an old army cantonment from the British era. Ranikhet is a little town with unspoilt natural beauty.
