West Bengal
The gateway state to the exotic Eastern India, West Bengal is a land of heritage, natural beauty, art, culture and poetry, and people marked with the human touch. The state stretches from the Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south. But it’s not only the wondrous natural splendour but also Bengal's artistic genius in theatre, folk music, literature, films, cuisines and paintings that makes this place a haven for visitors. Fish, rice and a plethora of sweets are Bengali specialties. Ace Bengali artisans work wonders with terracotta, conch shells, clay models, leather, batik and woodwork. Bengal handloom sarees, with exquisitely woven borders, also have a universal appeal. It is perhaps during the festival times like Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Diwali, Dol Jatra, Ganga, Id, Ramzan, Christmas and New Year that the true spirit of West Bengal can be experienced.
 GETTING HERE
The gateway to West Bengal is Kolkata, which was formerly known as Calcutta. Kolkata is connected to several Asian countries, Europe and the USA's east coast. Domestically, the city is also connected by air to almost all corners of the country. Trains also extensively connect Kolkata with every part of the country. There is also a direct bus service between Kolkata and Dhaka. The efficient bus services connect every town in West Bengal. Shipping Corporation of India operates ferries to and from Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands. To move around the city, Kolkata offers tourists with options like no other place in the country. One can travel by the public bus. Kolkata's Metro (India's first underground railway) is clean and efficient. Taxis and automotive three-wheelers are widely available. Kolkata is also the last real bastion of the human-powered rickshaw.
